The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

The iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus are Apple’s new “affordable” flagship iPhones with pricing starting at $799, and the devices are being sold alongside the more expensive iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple did away with the “mini” iPhone in 2022, and the iPhone 14 models come in 6.1- and 6.7-inch sizes. The new 6.7-inch iPhone 14 is called the “iPhone 14 Plus,” harkening back to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus and prior generations. Apple’s iPhone 14 models are identical in design to the iPhone 13 models, featuring flat edges, an aerospace-grade aluminum enclosure, and a glass back that enables wireless charging.

The iPhone 14 models come in blue, purple, midnight, starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED. Unlike the iPhone 14 Pro models, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus continue to have a notch at the top of the display that houses the TrueDepth camera. Like the iPhone 13 models, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus include Super Retina XDR OLED displays that support 1200 nits peak brightness, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, Dolby Vision, and True Tone support for matching the white balance of the display to the lighting in the room. There is no ProMotion display technology available in the standard iPhone 14 models, with this feature limited to the Pro models.

A durable Ceramic Shield front cover protects the iPhone’s display from bumps and drops, and the iPhone 14 models are IP68 water resistant, allowing them to withstand a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.

Apple is using the same A15 chip that was in the iPhone 13 Pro models for the iPhone 14 models, but there is an updated internal design that allows for better thermal performance. The A15 chip offers a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine.

There’s an updated 12-megapixel Wide camera that features a larger sensor, an ƒ/1.5 aperture, and larger 1.9 µm pixels for improved performance in low-light, plus there’s sensor-shift optical image stabilization. Apple also added an updated TrueDepth camera with an ƒ/1.9 aperture, and while the Ultra Wide lens didn’t get improvements, the Photonic Engine improves low-light photography across all of the iPhone 14 cameras.

Using a combination of hardware and software, the Photonic Engine improves low-light performance up to 2x on the Ultra Wide camera, 2x on the TrueDepth camera, and 2.5x on the Wide camera. The Photonic Engine expands on Deep Fusion and provides impressive detail while preserving subtle textures and providing improved color.

For video, there’s an Action mode that provides smooth-looking video with better image stabilization than ever before. Action mode is able to adjust to significant shakes, motion, and vibrations, even when video is captured in the middle of action. Cinematic mode has been improved and is available in 4K at 30 fps and 4K at 24 fps. The True Tone flash is 10 percent brighter with better uniformity for more consistent lighting.

The iPhone 14 models include a dual-core accelerometer that can measure up to 256Gs, and the accelerometer and a high dynamic range gyroscope power a Crash Detection feature that can automatically contact emergency services if you’re in a serious accident and can’t reach your iPhone. Apple also uses other sensors to power this feature, so the barometer detects changes in cabin pressure, the GPS watches for rapid speed changes, and the microphone can listen for car crash noises.

Apple also added Emergency SOS via satellite, an option that allows the iPhone 14 to connect directly to satellites for communication purposes in emergency situations when WiFi and cellular are not available. Emergency SOS via satellite works in open areas with few trees, and it allows users to send texts to emergency personnel. It is free for two years and works in the U.S. and Canada. Satellite connectivity can also be used to share your location with friends and family in Find My when you’re out hiking or camping in remote areas.

As with the iPhone 13 models, the iPhone 14 models support 5G connectivity (sub-6GHz and mmWave in the United States), and they use a new Qualcomm X65 modem. In the United States, iPhone models ship without a physical SIM card as carriers now use eSIM.

Battery life has been improved with the iPhone 14, and it lasts an hour longer than the iPhone 13. With its larger size, the iPhone 14 Plus has even longer battery life than the iPhone 14. iPhone 14 lasts for up to 20 hours when watching video, while iPhone 14 Plus lasts for up to 26 hours when watching video.

The iPhone 14 models are available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage capacities. MagSafe charging up to 15W continues to be supported, and fast charging over Lightning is available with a 20W or higher charger. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus also support WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3.

Pricing and Availability

iPhone 14 pricing starts at $799 for 128GB of storage, while pricing on the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899 for 128GB of storage. Additional storage is available for a higher price. Pre-orders began on Friday, September 9, with the iPhone 14 set to launch on Friday, September 16 and the iPhone 14 Plus set to launch on Friday, October 7.

Design

The iPhone 14 is essentially identical to the iPhone 13, with no design updates aside from new colors. It features the same flat-sided design with squared-off edges that Apple used for last year’s iPhones.

Apple’s iPhone 14 measures in at 6.1 inches, while the larger-screened iPhone 14 Plus measures in at 6.7 inches, the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 14 models feature an all-glass front and colorful glass back framed by a color-matched aerospace-grade aluminum frame. A notch at the top of the display includes the TrueDepth camera, speaker, and microphone, with Apple keeping the notch around for its more affordable devices. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max no longer use a notch, and instead have a “Dynamic Island.”

A set of antenna bands can be seen on the top and sides of the phone, with a power button on the right and volume buttons and a silence switch on the left. Underneath the power button, there’s a 5G mmWave antenna, but this is limited to iPhone 14 models sold in the United States.

There are speaker holes and microphones at the bottom of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, along with a Lightning port for charging purposes. Apple has eliminated the SIM slot in the United States, as it has transitioned to eSIM.

The camera bump at the back of the iPhones is unchanged, featuring a diagonal lens setup, a True Tone flash, and a microphone.

The iPhone 14 measures in at 5.78 inches tall (146.7mm), 2.82 inches wide (71.5mm), and 0.31 inches deep (7.80mm), identical to the iPhone 13 except for the thickness. It is 0.15mm thicker, which is something that most people will not notice. The iPhone 14 weighs 6.07 ounces (172 grams), so it is just a bit lighter than the iPhone 13.

The iPhone 14 Plus measures in at 6.33 inches tall (160.8mm), 3.07 inches wide (78.1mm), and 0.31 inches thick (7.80mm). It weights in at 7.16 ounces (203 grams).

No iPhone 14 mini

Last year, Apple sold a 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini alongside the 6.1-inch iPhone 13, but this year, there is no 5.4-inch iPhone. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini did not sell well according to analyst estimates, leading Apple to discontinue that particular size.

Apple now offers the iPhone in 6.1- and 6.7-inch sizes, which are the same sizes available for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This is the first time that Apple has offered a larger version of a standard iPhone, as in past years, the 6.7-inch size was limited to “Pro” versions of the iPhone.

iOS 16 is Available Today

Apple iOS 16 Released: The New iPhone Features You Get From the Update Change

Change up your lock screen or lift objects out of your photos.

Apple’s iOS 16 is now available for anyone with a compatible iPhone, and you can download it, to get access to lots of new features and customizations.

iOS 16, which was first announced in the spring at Apple’s WWDC conference, has gone through several beta versions prior to its public launch alongside the iPhone 14. It comes with a slew of new features and upgrades that aim to improve how your iPhone works. This includes a more customizable lock screen, a way to edit send messages, and a magic photo editing tool. Plus, the battery percentage is back.

If you’re curious about what else iOS 16 offers, read on as we break down the 11 best new features on your iPhone. Just make sure you’ve already completed these three steps first and check out the lesser known features lurking in iOS 16, too.

Apple's Newest Releases

The ability to edit and 'unsend' messages

“Embarrassing typos are a thing of the past,” Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said at WWDC as he introduced three of the most requested features for the Messages app.

First, in iOS 16 you’ll be able to edit send messages. So if you notice a typo after a message, you’ll be able to edit the message after the fact. A tiny “edited” appears in the status under the message.

Next, and this might be my favorite new feature, you can immediately recall a sent message. If you accidentally send an unfinished message, you can use the Undo Send tool to prevent it from being read and hopefully look less chaotic to your friends and family.

Last, you can mark messages and threads as unread. This could be an excellent tool for when you don’t have time to respond to a message in the moment, but want to make sure you come back to it later.

A new customizable lock screen

One of the things you look at the most on your iPhone is the lock screen, especially if you have a Face ID-equipped iPhone. iOS 16 brings the most substantial update to the iPhone lock screen yet. Press and hold to edit your lock screen. You can swipe to try out several different styles. Each style changes the color filter for the background photo and the font on the lock screen so everything complements each other. This feels a bit like Apple’s take on Google’s Material You, which launched with Android 12.

You can also customize the fonts for the time and date, and add lock screen widgets like temperature, activity rings and a calendar. The widgets are akin to complications on the Apple Watch lock screen.

You can even set up multiple customized lock screens with different widgets and easily swipe to switch between them. There’s also a photo shuffle option that automatically changes the pictures on your lock screen.

One feature we’d been hoping to see Apple add was an always-on display. It’s something nearly all Android phones have; even the Apple Watch does. Well, with the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the always on display has finally arrived.

Notifications and live activities

Sometimes notifications can cover up your lock screen’s photo, so iOS 16 moves notifications to the bottom of your display. As you receive them, instead of being compiled into a list, they appear like a vertical carousel. This not only looks better but should be a big help for one-handed use of your iPhone.

iOS 16 also aims to solve another notification problem. Sometimes you get a bunch of notifications in a row from one app, like the score of a basketball game. A new tool for developers called Live Activities makes it easier to stay on top of things happening in real time from your lock screen, instead of getting a series of interruptions.

Live Activities should make it easier to follow sporting events, workouts or even the progress of an Uber ride.

Skip CAPTCHAs using Private Access Tokens

The CAPTCHA has been a necessary evil across the internet. CAPTCHAs are designed to make sure that a person is accessing a website or service, and not a bot. I find them annoying, as they often involve reading strangely written letters or having to find all the images that have a truck. With iOS 16, Apple plans to start replacing these awkward interactions with Private Access Tokens.

According to a video on  Apple’s website demonstrating Private Access Tokens, websites that support the token will essentially log in and authenticate that you are indeed a human without you having to play any of the usual CAPTCHA games. Apple says in the video that the company is working with other companies to roll out support for this feature, so we can’t say the CAPTCHA will be dead after iOS 16 rolls out to the public. But the concept could provide some relief if it gets adopted.

Wallet and Apple Pay Later

ID cards from more states will be available in your Wallet app along with more security and privacy features. In iOS 16 you can also protect your identity and age. So rather than showing your exact birth date, the Wallet app will display your ID and that you’re over 21.

iOS 16 makes sharing keys easier with apps like Mail and Messages. When your friend receives the key, they can add it to the Wallet app on their iPhone. Apple said it’s working to make sure that shared keys are an industry standard and free for others.

Apple Pay will support new types of payments and adds a new feature called Apple Pay Later, a Klarna-like service that lets you split the cost of an Apple Pay purchase into four equal payments spread over six weeks, with zero interest and no fees. Upcoming payments are managed through the Wallet app, making it easy to keep track of dates and payments.

But Apple Pay doesn’t stop there. A new feature will also help you track Apple Pay orders and lets merchants deliver detailed receipts and tracking information. This should make it easier to stay up to date on the status of all your orders.

Visual Look Up's tap and drag for photos

In iOS 15, Visual Look Up analyzes your photos and can identify objects like plants, landmarks and pets. iOS 16 takes this to the next level. When you touch a photo’s subject like the dog in the image above, you can lift it away from the background and add it to apps like Messages. Essentially it’s a tap-and-hold tool that removes a photo’s background.

Apple sometimes overuses the word “magic,” but this feature truly seems like it.

SharePlay comes to Messages

SharePlay, which debuted in iOS 15, lets you have a shared experience while connecting with someone over FaceTime. You can watch TV shows, listen to music in sync and other things. iOS 16 adds the ability to discover more apps that support SharePlay from within FaceTime.

But perhaps one of the coolest things Apple did for SharePlay was to make it work within the Messages app. Apple said that this was one of the biggest requests from app developers. Now when you want to share a movie on Disney Plus, you can start SharePlay together with a friend while chatting in Messages.

Safety Check aims to help people in abusive relationships

Safety Check is a new feature intended to be helpful for people in abusive relationships. It lets you review and reset who has access to location information as well as passwords, messages and other apps on an iPhone.

Focus mode updates and Focus filters

Focus mode gets several updates. The first applies Focus behaviors to widgets and lock screen looks. So you could have one lock screen set for when your Work Focus is enabled and another for workouts.

Apple added specific Focus filters that apply your iPhone’s Focus mode within apps. For example, in Safari, you can limit what tabs are shown depending on what Focus mode you have active.

Apple Maps adds transit fare cards

Maps gets several updates. You’ll be able to plan trips with up to 15 different stops along the way. If you start planning a trip with the Maps app on your Mac, you’ll be able to share that to your iPhone.

And in something similar to what Google announced for Google Wallet in Android 13, you’ll be able to see transit fare estimates as well as add more money to a fare card from within Apple Maps.

Apple Watch Series 8

Announced in September 2022, the Apple Watch Series 8 is the newest iteration of the Apple Watch that originally came out in 2015, and it replaces the Apple Watch Series 7.

The Apple Watch Series 8 features no design updates compared to the prior-generation model, with all of the same features and functionality. There continue to be 41mm and 45mm size options, and the casings feature the same rounded edges, slim-bordered display, sapphire crystal backing, and Digital Crown with haptic feedback

There is an Always-On display that lets users see their watch face and complications at all times, and the Series 8 features crack-resistant front glass, IP6X dust resistance, and a WR50 water resistance rating. Apple Pay purchases are available with credit and debit cards stored in the Wallet app, and it has the same faster charging speeds with updated charging puck as on the Series 7. There is an S8 chip inside, but it is essentially identical to the S6 chip from two years ago with no speed improvements.

Heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen detection, ECG readings, sleep tracking, fall detection, and loud noise monitoring continue to be available, plus Apple has added a few new features this year. There’s a built-in temperature sensor that’s used for giving women additional insights into their health.

The feature is based on a two-sensor design that captures temperature information from the back of the watch near the skin and under the display, reducing environmental bias. At night, the Apple Watch Series 8 takes a temperature reading every five seconds, and it can detect changes as small as one degree. Apple Watch Series 8 owners can see nightly shifts in their baseline temperature that can be the result of exercise, jet lag, or illness.

Apple Watch Series 8 uses the temperature sensor to provide women with retrospective ovulation estimates, which can be helpful for family planning purposes. The data also provides improved period predictions, and in watchOS 9, women can receive notifications if a logged cycle history shows a possible deviation like irregular, infrequent, or prolonged periods.

A new Crash Detection feature takes advantage of an updated gyroscope and accelerometer along with an advanced sensor-fusion algorithm to detect severe car crashes and alert emergency services. When a crash occurs, the Apple Watch checks in with the user and if no response is received within a 10-second countdown, emergency responders will be contacted.

Battery life remains the same at up to 18 hours, but it can be extended with a new Low Power Mode added in watchOS 9. With Low Power Mode, the Apple Watch can run for up to 36 hours, but it disables the Always-On display, turns off background heart rate measurements, limits WiFi and cellular connections, and more.

There are both GPS and cellular Apple Watch models, and later this fall, Apple plans to add support for international roaming, allowing Apple Watch owners to connect to a cellular plan when traveling abroad.

The Apple Watch Series 8 is available in aluminum and stainless steel. Aluminum colors include Starlight, Midnight, Silver, and (PRODUCT)RED, while the stainless steel models come in Silver, Graphite, and Gold. Apple has introduced new band colors to go along with the Series 8, and it can be purchased with any available band.

Apple has also introduced new bands and watch faces for Nike and Hermès Apple Watch models, and the Series 8 is now being

Apple has also introduced new bands and watch faces for Nike and Hermès Apple Watch models, and the Series 8 is now being sold alongside the higher-end, larger, and more feature rich Apple Watch Ultra, plus the lower-cost Second-generation Apple Watch SE.
